Formula 1 bosses are to investigate ways of promoting the advance of environmentally friendly technology.

The idea is the brainchild of Jean Todt, who succeeded Max Mosley as president of motorsport’s governing body the FIA in October.

Ex-Ferrari F1 engine boss Gilles Simon has joined the FIA to lead the project.

Todt, who revealed the plan in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro, added that more needed to be done to cut costs in F1.

Todt said he regretted the decision by F1 teams to abandon the Kers energy recovery and power boost systems that were used in 2009.

The teams dropped Kers – which was only used by McLaren, Ferrari, Renault and BMW Sauber – on cost-cutting grounds.

“I am convinced that we absolutely must reflect the environment with new technologies,” Todt said.

“We must adapt to our time and review fundamentally motorsport – even create new disciplines.

“After giving up on Kers, we will accomplish nothing innovative next year. I’m sorry about that. I have therefore decided to create a working group… Gilles Simon, former boss at Ferrari engines, will join the FIA in this context.”

Todt’s views on cost-cutting mirror those of Mosley, who was forced out of the FIA presidency after a long and bitter political battle with the F1 teams through the summer.

Mosley had wanted to introduce a budget cap of £40m, but the teams rejected that idea and have instead made big cuts by limiting spending in certain areas of research.

EDF Energy and Birmingham City council started a half marathon last year, the run billed as “race against climate change” uses engergy saving and other energy efficient saving method as its theme, even the race preparation advice is built around engergy efficientcy.

In the build up to the race, Birmingham city council has been sending out training tips and advice which does not consist of just the usualy how fast you should run a certain amount of mile but mostly how to be a environment friendly runner. Here is the first training tip and advice sent out:

1. Washing your running kit regularly is obviously essential. Washing your clothing at low temperatures (30 degrees centigrade) can be just as effective as high temperature (and higher energy consumption) wash cycles if you use certain modern washing detergents, and some of these are even eco-friendly too! Washing full loads can also help save energy and conserve water too, just make sure you check your user manual to make sure you don’t over fill your washing machine.

2. Rather than using the drier, try to dry your clothes on an outside line, taking advantage of the warmer summer weather, or a drying rack. This could help make a big difference to your domestic energy consumption.

3. Technical running kit is usually made from synthetic based products such as nylon, lycra and polyester. Some cutting edge fabrics are now available which have increased renewable content to them – cotton singlets and tees can be organic or blended with bamboo to reduce environmentally-harmful effects of the crops, and are breathable, and absorbent.

4. Recycle – it’s good for your soles: As your training progresses, the wear on your running shoes adds up and you may need to replace them regularly. But don’t just throw away your old pair – recycle them at your local recycling centre. Many shoes are now reused in sports courts, tracks and flooring.

5. Turn down the heat at home. Turn the thermostat down a degree or two and wear a jumper in the house on cooler evenings instead to cut domestic energy use. With the extra training, your metabolism will likely be higher helping you to feel warmer a lot of the time anyway. For more useful tips on how to reduce your energy consumption around the home, check out the Team Energy section of www.teamgreenbritain.org

According to Paul Lavelle, the developer of eco-friendly property, Barnsley Hill in Gloucestershire, the property is so energy efficient it leaves the carbon footprint of a two-bedroom flat. Barnsley Hill Farm is a 400 year old six-bedroom house with 25 seat cinema and a pool.
Energy efficiency which lead to the extremely low carbon footprint for a property of that age and size was achieved by the property being made airtight, the wall and roof was sealed with polyurethane blanket. The ventilation system was designed to bring in filtered fresh air, which is heat up by a heat exchanger powered by the outgoing warm air. Outgoing warm air heating up incoming cold air alone is said to reduce energy consumption of the property significantly.

A huge expansion of wind power, home insulation and “smart” electricity meters are among measures being planned to build the UK’s low-carbon future.
Ministers hope their Carbon Transition Plan will help them meet 2020 targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions and expanding renewable energy.
Campaigners say the plan is a chance for the UK to lead on climate change.
The government admits consumers will pay more for energy, but believes that overall the economy can benefit.
Up to £120m will go towards developing the offshore wind power sector, and £60m on wave and tidal technologies.

There is support for research on nuclear energy, and £10m will be spent on accelerating infrastructure for recharging electric vehicles.

The details of the plan were outlined by Climate and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband in the Commons.

A recent research by Logistic Research Centre at Heriot Watt University in Scotland on the impact of shopping online and having items you bought delivered to your home compared with you making a trip to the high street to buy the items yourself found that online shopping is significantly more environment friendly than making your own trip to the supermarket or high street.

The research team compared environment impact in terms of carbon footprint of online and regular shopping for items such as CDs, books, cameras and household goods. It was found that a typical home delivery by courier produced 181g of CO2, however making your own journey by car to the shops produces 4,274g of CO2.
The team looked into other form of transportation shoppers us such as public transport like a bus, it was found that an average shopper who travel by bus produced 1,265g of CO2. The finding was also summarised as follows: If a consumer drives to the shop and buy fever than 24 small items per trip or travels by bus and buys fewer than 7 items, then home delivery is more environment friendly.

There has been anecdotal evidence that shopping online is more environment friendly than trips to supermarkets or high street. Last year, there was a significant reduction in consumers driving to shop when petrol was extremely, most of them shop online on go to the high street by public transport. Driving to the shops could also be as environment friendly as shopping online if you buy a large number of items so that when carbon footprint it distributed per item bought, it could end up being the same as or even lover than shopping online.

Recently is was claimed that two searched on the Internet performed using Google emits as much CO2 as boiling a kettle. Though the scientieswho make that claim has subsequently issues some clarifications.
Whether CO2 produced from two search on Google equals the same CO2 when a kettle is boiled for tea or now, the fact is that datacenters on our fragile planet Earth use about 4% of the world’s electricity.

Its true folks! It takes a lot of power to run servers, to cool them with energy hungry air conditioners. Most web hosting companies are aware of this issue but only 3% of them are actively doing something about reducing their business environment impact.

Though a lot of companies are making noises about being socially responsible, very few of them are actively doing something to address the issues. Web hosting industry is very lucrative and equally extremely competitive making over 95% of web hosting companies shun the steps required to make their operation kinder to the environment

A handful of web hosting company pioneer a new niche called Green Web Hosting, this number is increasing gradually. The use various methods to offset their carbon footprint, some of the methods they use includes purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates, generating their own power in house using solar, wind or other green power generating technologies, joining carbon offsetting scheme, getting their staff to telecommute, cycle or walk to work and other hosts of green initiatives.

The 3% of web hosting companies world wide that can be considered green includes a Canadian company called Bounceweb. In partnership with a 3rd party environment impact reduction company called 3Degrees, Bounceweb have managed to reduce their web hosting process to zero. Bounceweb claimed not to have only offset their carbon footprint but reduced it to zero with clean wind power energy.

The carbon offsetting program Bouceeweb implemented to make hosting greener is said to have added an average of 31% more to their overheads when compared with hosting companies that do not use green energy technology.
If you want to put a site online or you have a website online already, considering green hosting company is one of the way to reduce your environmental impact.

Gordon Brown is promising this month’s Budget will plot a “green” route to economic recovery. Part of the eco measure the prime minister hope will boost the economy includes Trials of electric cars, a roadside network of vehicle-charging points and incentives for environmentally friendly carmakers. The prime minister who was trying to drum up support for another rounds cash injection into the economy before the G20 submit seem to have headed the bank of England governor’s warning that another injection of of fiscal stimulus into the economy was not a good idea. Mr Brown bill the Budget to be read on the 22 April as the “a job creator, a quality of life improver, and an environment-enhancing measure”.

As can be expected, the opposition was quick to condemn Mr Brown green budget. Shadow energy and climate change secretary, Greg Clark said: “Now that the governor of the Bank of England has aborted Gordon Brown’s plans for a ruinous new debt-funded fiscal stimulus, the prime minister is desperate for something to say in the forthcoming budget.

Fridge manufacturers have been doing battle with technology to counter the claims of environment activist that their manufacturing process including the gases used in to cool the fridges damage the ozone layer.

Different cooling gases has been introduce into fridge making, some are said to do not damage to the ozone layer, other are said to be more environment friendly than the CFC gases used in fridges before the damage it does to the environment was known.

A new fridge specifically designed for camping and other outdoor uses went on sale recently, the Eskimo 50lt 3 way fridge. The Ice Cold 50 Litre fridge is an ideal large family fridge, and can hold enough food for the whole family and most important plenty of beer for our very hot summer climate this camping season

The Eskimo 50lt has a unique refrigeration system which has no CF Cs,so it is very environmental friendly which is great in helping to save our planet.
